1 Samuel 29-31
How does God work through our failures, hardships, and circumstances to accomplish His purposes?
Pastor Wayne Wilson concludes the book of 1 Samuel by tracing the final days of Saul’s reign and God’s providential preparation of David to become king.
David has placed himself in a dangerous position—marching with the Philistines as they prepare to attack Israel. Yet God quietly intervenes through the Philistine commanders, removing David from the battle and preventing him from participating in Saul’s death. What appears to be rejection is actually God’s protection.
When David returns to Ziklag, he discovers the city burned and the families taken captive. Facing grief, blame, and the possibility of being stoned by his own men, David strengthens himself in the Lord his God. He seeks God’s direction, pursues the Amalekites, and recovers everything that was taken. His failure and suffering drive him back to the Lord.
The story then turns to Saul, whose life ends in defeat on Mount Gilboa. The contrast is sobering: when Saul faced trouble, he moved farther from God; when David stumbled, he eventually returned to God. Through every event, God faithfully removed Saul, protected David, and prepared His chosen king for the throne.
The final chapters reminds us to let our troubles and mistakes push us back toward the Lord. Even when we fail, God remains faithful and can work all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.
