Pastor Wayne Wilson explores the remarkable friendship between David and Jonathan in 1 Samuel. While King Saul responds to David’s success with jealousy, suspicion, and hostility, Jonathan responds with love, loyalty, generosity, and self-sacrifice.
Jonathan does not view David as a rival. He recognizes God’s work in David’s life, rejoices in his success, and protects him—even when doing so could cost Jonathan his future throne. His example challenges us to become friends who celebrate rather than compete, give rather than grasp, and remain faithful when friendship becomes costly.
This message also warns us about the destructive power of envy. Saul’s wounded pride gradually grows into fear, manipulation, and hatred. Yet amid Saul’s attacks, David continues to trust the Lord as his strength, shield, and stronghold.
Are we becoming the kind of friends who genuinely seek the good of others?
