What happens when fear takes the wheel—even in the life of a faithful man?

Pastor Wayne Wilson continues David’s story in 1 Samuel 21–22. Once celebrated as Israel’s courageous hero, David is now fleeing for his life from King Saul. Although God has promised David a future as king, fear begins to shape his decisions.
David deceives Ahimelech the priest, seeks security in Goliath’s sword, and runs to the Philistine city of Gath. When the servants of King Achish recognize him, David’s fear intensifies, and he pretends to be insane to escape.

These choices are not harmless. David’s deception eventually contributes to Saul’s horrific slaughter of the priests at Nob. The story reminds us that fear-driven decisions, dishonesty, and attempts to take control can produce consequences far beyond anything we anticipated.

Yet David’s failure is not the end of his story. Psalms 34 and 56 reveal what he learned through this experience: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.” Our troubles can either drive a wedge between us and God or press us closer to Him.
When fear comes, will we seize the wheel—or trust the One who already knows the way?
